I can’t promise that this crash video, taken last month on the Dallas North Tollway, will be the most startling thing that you see today. But it’s going to be close. The video, from a North Texas Tollway Authority surveillance camera, shows a motorcyclist getting slammed from behind by a small silver car on the tollway between Belt Line Road and Arapaho. His bike gets sandwiched between that car that hits it and a car in front. The motorcyclist would have been crushed, too, but he’s thrown into the next lane of traffic — where he barely misses being run over by a white SUV. “I’m all right,” the motorcyclist, 25-year-old Zacharie Perez (right), said in an interview. “I guess I was pretty fortunate.” Perez, who was in Parkland Memorial Hospital for five days after the crash, lost his spleen – it had to be removed because it ruptured. He fractured a rib and four vertebrae. He has torn muscles and may need further surgery to repair a hernia. Still, he knows, it could have been much worse. “Everyone who’s seen the video says I was lucky,” he says. “My fiancé’s mother said everyone she knows who’s been involved in a motorcycle accident is either dead or paralyzed.” Perez, who was wearing a helmet, is already back at his job, working for Viverae , a corporate wellness company. He expects to make a full recovery, though he says he still has a slight limp and chronic back pain, along with soreness in his knees.
